Why are so many
used Harleys? The reason there are so many used Harleys is a multi faceted answer. !. The population is aging. The people who grew up on Hondas, Triumphs, Nortons, ext. than hit that mid age crisis all at once really had a lot of money to burn, and the Harleys, and the Motorhomes, and the Ski Boats, all sold quite well for a while. Now the advancing age of the Boomers is slowing down the toy sales. A lot of folks just dont want to ride after they bought that new H.D. and put a lot of bucks into making it their own? 2. The H.D. factory went crazy with production, increasing the numbers of bikes built every year, especially in 2003, their 100th anniversary year. Unfortunatly they also opened a lot of dealers in secondary markets, pushed them to buy more product, and in 03, 04, 05, and 06 flooded the market. As a buyer for a group of dealers, I was buying 1998-2004 H.D.s, many with thousands in accessories, for below low book. Low book, not over retail book, as they were untill 2002. The majority of these bikes had under 1000 miles. 3. The economy is cooling and the toys are the first to go, unless you are a real bonafied biker, riding all your life, not an obnoxious newby, with a fresh Fat Boy, a new doo rag, and a fresh HD tatoo. In reality, H.D. who after all is a Corporation out to make Bucks, is still increasing there sales, but not in the U.S.A. They are exporting more numbers of bikes now to countries like China. Not in big numbers, but enough to help their bottom line. As it has been explained here by others, H.D. is actually a much smaller company compared to say Honda Ltd. the parent company of American Honda, or Yamaha, also a multi national co. If you love to ride, ride on., dont worry about what everyone else rides. Enjoy it while we can. In answer to why no Indians? Smaller numbers, and also the old bikes, of any brand, and the rarer bikes, are always harder to find.
