Mommy in Halloween Costume
Wednesday, October 29, 2008 @ 1:13 AM

My kids are finally at that age where they're asking, "Mom, what are you going to be for Halloween?" Sadly, saying "a mom" doesn't fly. My daughters follow up with a lengthy list of very clever suggestions, which include: a fairy, a ghost, a witch," any character from "Wonder Pets," and my personal favorite, a crazy rock star lady with a wacky wig (said with a little giggle).
The bottom line? They want me to dress up for Halloween. Will I do it? Awww yeah.
I did a television segment last week on DIY Halloween costumes for kids, and I'm just going to snag one of those ideas for myself. Ahoy matey, I'm going to be a pirate! (I'll have a photo tutorial on the kid's version of that costume tomorrow...it's so easy you can make it on Halloween.)
So what about you? Do your kids want you to dress up for Halloween? Will you do it? And...what will you dress up as?

Candy Corn Facts
@ 12:50 AM

With Halloween approaching, what better time to learn a few kernels of truth about a favorite fall treat? Candy corn has been made with the same recipe -- containing sugar, corn syrup, and marshmallow -- by the Jelly Belly Candy Company since around 1900. One serving (about 30 pieces) has 140 calories, the equivalent of three miniature Hershey bars. The National Confectioners Association reports that more than 35 million pounds were manufactured in 2005, amounting to almost 9 billion kernels.

Remembering When Filipinos and Americans Were Comrades-in-Arms
Monday, May 26, 2008 @ 12:42 AM
The Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, located in what is now called Global City (formerly Ft. William McKinley) is the largest cemetery built and administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission. In this sprawling 152 acre site are buried 16,636 Americans and and 570 Filipinos. In addition, the names of 32,520 Americans and 3,762 Filipinos whose remains were never recovered or identified are inscribed on the Walls of the Missing.

The cemetery which is impeccably maintained, is a indeed a fitting tribute to those who gave their lives so that we can live in freedom and democracy. Sadly, to many young Filipinos, what happened during World War II is nothing but "ancient history." There is a failure to truly appreciate the hardship and the sacrifice of those brave men and women who stood up to the invading Japanese. Filipinos and Americans together as comrades fought the Japanese at every turn. And unlike other countries that quickly fell to the invading Japanese forces, the Philippines valiantly resisted and in the process delayed the Japanese advance into Southeast Asia. This delay gave the Allies time to get their bearings and mount a serious counter-offensive that eventually culminated in the defeat of Japan in 1945.
Americans soldiers of the time acknowledged the bravery and fighting prowess of the Filipino soldiers and guerillas. And Filipinos in turn were grateful to the American GIs who courageously fought and died to rid the Japanese invaders from the Philippines. This Memorial Day, let us remember the men and women (Filipino and American) who paid the ultimate price so that you and I can live in peace and freedom today. Happy Memorial Day!
